What is compounded thyroid?
Our thyroid capsules use synthetic T3 and T4. They are not DTE (desiccated thyroid extract), the animal-derived ingredient in Armour and NP Thyroid.
Compounded thyroid capsules contain T4 (levothyroxine), T3 (liothyronine) or both, at strengths your provider writes. Slow-release capsules are made with a hypromellose (Methocel) base.
Safety information
Compounded thyroid capsules are not FDA approved. Thyroid doses are sensitive, so your provider will check lab values after any change. Do not switch between products without talking with your provider.
This list isn't all-inclusive. Your provider can prescribe other strengths, combinations or dosage forms. Call us at 626.631.6150 and we'll work with you and your provider to find an option that fits.
Common questions
Why would my provider prescribe compounded thyroid?
When a patient needs something a commercial product does not provide, such as a T3/T4 ratio, a slow-release capsule or a formula without a specific inactive ingredient. Your provider notes the reason on the prescription.
Can you compound Armour Thyroid or NP Thyroid?
No. We don't compound desiccated (animal-derived) thyroid. We compound synthetic T3 and T4, alone or combined, at the strengths and ratio your provider prescribes.
